Matt studied medicine at University College London where he also gained an undergraduate degree in Medical Anthropology. He trained as a General Adult Psychiatrist in Central and North London where he went on to work as a consultant psychiatrist and borough medical lead in the NHS. He is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He has a particular interest in group-based psychotherapies and is a full member of the Institute of Group Analysis, where he trained as a group analyst.
He has considerable experience supervising therapists and trainee doctors in group and individual psychotherapies. His last role in the NHS prior to joining Awakn was as consultant psychiatrist to a community psychological therapy service which offered specialist trauma and attachment-informed therapies for a range of difficulties. He has worked extensively with people with problems diagnosed as PTSD, personality disorder, OCD, depressive and anxiety disorders and psychosis, primarily in community settings but also as in-patients.
Matt’s approach to his work is informed by the understanding that many of the difficulties people experience, as well as the resources to improve these, are often rooted in their relationships with others. He has become increasingly interested in the therapeutic potential of psychedelics and in particular how psychedelics, together with psychotherapy, can help people on their way to achieving meaningful and lasting shifts in these relational patterns and thus in their experience of themselves.
